Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s

In ’70s Japan, award-winning artist Tetsuya Noda pioneered a contemporary art movement by transforming photographic portraits of his family into prints to create unique artworks enhanced by the use of print blocks, paper and ink.

Presented by the Japanese Foundation of Kuala Lumpur, Photographic Images and Matter: Japanese Prints of the 1970s features works by Noda as well as other Japanese artists including Kosuke Kimura, Akira Matsumoto and Sakumi Hagiwara. This free exhibition is currently at Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah in Penang’s Universiti Sains Malaysia from March 10 to April 8, 2022 before it travels to Sabah Art Gallery from April 18 to May 18, 2022.

Truly an art exhibition of the people, New New features the works of established and emerging artists, curated by M Gallery owner, Muhammad Iqbal Mohd Sofian, who also runs the minimalist coffee bar in this gallery space.

This group exhibition features a wide range of techniques, forms and themes, on display from now till March 30, 2022.

Kok Yew Puah: Portrait of a Malaysian Artist

Klang-born printmaker Kok Yew Puah is the star of this nostalgic exhibition, which features the late artist’s figurative print works from the ’80s and ’90s.

Known for producing emotive artworks inspired by industrialised landscapes in Klang, Puah’s style was heavily influenced by English artist David Hockney’s pop art. Catch them at Ilham Gallery from now till April 3, 2022.

‘catharsis’ by Ivan Lam

Acclaimed Malaysian contemporary artist Ivan Lam’s catharsis is a must-see, available from now till April 16, 2022. The exhibition features five large-panelled paintings which depict the artist’s struggle with physical pain and the desire to mark those struggles on canvas rather than hide it away.
